Is Our Society Doomed?

“When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion- When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing- when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors- when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you- when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice- you may know that your society is doomed.”    – Francisco D’Anconia (Atlas Shrugged)

Take a moment and think about the above quote.  Is this where we are at in the United States?   Who are the most powerful people in the country?  Are they those who have produced something valuable?  Are they those who have used their minds to create something no one else has?  Are they those who provide the best service at the best price?  No.  They are politicians who produce nothing.  They are bureaucrats who tell us all the steps that we must take first before we can produce something.  They are looters who decide how much of our money to take and then give those funds to the friend who can best ensure continued power.

Where does the money flow in this country?  It flows to those to who deal in favors.  There is a reason our ‘public servant’ politicians become extremely wealthy while in office and after.  It is not because of their ability to produce, but rather their ability to trade favors.  And these are not favors that deal with their own assets, but rather with the looted assets of those who actually produce something.  Think about Abound Solar ($790.3 million), Solyndra ($570 million), A123 Systems ($377.1 million), Ener1 ($182.8 million), Range Fuels ($162.3 million) and many other companies who were given our money as a favor.  These companies produced nothing!  Our politicians used the money they looted from us to give to friends who helped them get elected.  Our money flowed, not to the best producers or the best minds, but rather to the best friends of the politicians.

In a truly free country, it is the productivity of the mind which leads to success.  In a doomed society, as described above, it is about who you know which determines your success.  What should be the determining factors in success?  Should it be your mind, your actions, and your dedication?  Or should it be who you know?

We wonder why our politicians are so corrupt.  We wonder how they could have ever become so powerful to get away with the crimes they commit.  It is because we give them the power.   With every crisis, real or imagined, we grant them the power to ‘fix’ it.  The bigger the government gets, the weaker the correlation will be between your ability to produce and success.  Do you want our politicians to be the gatekeepers of success?
